Aloe Vera Care Guide
ALEX THE ALOE VERA
LIGHTING
Alex prefers a well lit room - near a south or west facing window is ideal. Alex can tolerate direct sunlight in the winter months but might burn if placed too close to a big window in the hotter months.
WATERING
Alex is very drought tolerant and can go many weeks without water. Allow his soil to dry out completely before you water him again. In the summer you may only need to water him once every 3-4 weeks. In the winter his watering schedule should be reduced.
HUMIDITY
Alex doesn’t need a humid environment to thrive and will not need to be placed in a humid room or near a humidifier.
TEMPERATURE
Alex prefers warm temperatures and should be placed in a room between 15-30ºC. If he is placed outside in the summer months be sure to bring him inside before the temperatures dip lower than 13ºC at night.
FERTILISER
Alex does not need regular fertilising as he is a slow grower. Use a diluted houseplant fertiliser once every growing season to encourage faster growth. Fertilising is not essential to Alex’s survival.
REPOTTING
Alex is a slow grower and will not need to be re-potted very often. Check the bottom of his nursery pot for plenty of large roots sticking out of the pot. This is a sign that he is ready for a bigger home. Alex prefers well-draining soil and should be repotted with mixed materials to help with drainage such as coarse sand, perlite and bark.
TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR ALOE VERA
Brown tips - Browning tips are often caused by under watering. Alex is quite drought tolerant but if left without water for more than 2-3 months he may develop some brown tips.
Leaves drooping or leaning - This could mean a few things:
- Alex will lean towards the light source. This might be a sign that he is not getting enough sunlight or that his pot needs to be rotated regularly to even growth.
- Alex will start to lean if placed in a shallow pot. If necessary place him in a deep pot that gives his stems more support.
Black spots - Black spots are often caused by overwatering. Wait until his soil has completely dried out before you water him again.
OUR TOP 3 CARE TIPS
Top tip 1: Keep Alex’s soil on the drier side and water thoroughly once every 2-3 weeks.
Top tip 2: Rotate Alex’s pot weekly for even growth. He will naturally grow towards the light.
Top tip 3: Alex will want to absorb as much light as possible. Use a damp cloth to clean his leaves weekly to allow his leaves to absorb more light.
