Philodendron Scandens Brasil Care Guide
BENNY THE PHILODENDRON SCANDENS BRASIL
LIGHTING
Benny isn’t one to fuss and can tolerate low/medium light but will grow faster in a bright room with plenty of indirect sunlight. He’s a fast growing, vining plant that will grow quickly in the growth season.
WATERING
To keep Benny happy you should allow his soil to dry out a little before each watering. He is drought tolerant and won’t object to going a few weeks without a drink - especially during the winter months when most plants go into dormancy.
HUMIDITY
Benny prefers a humid room so placing him nearby plants that release humidity like Lily, Bonnie and Hamish can help increase humidity around your plant. Find out how to increase humidity in your home here.
TEMPERATURE
An ideal temperature for Benny is between 18-25ºC. Benny prefers warmer temperatures but can adapt to a cooler room providing the temperatures stays above 15ºC.
FERTILISER
Benny is a fast grower. Use a houseplant fertiliser every 4 weeks to promote new growth. Do not fertilise in the winter months.
REPOTTING
Benny can be repotted once every 18 months-2 years. Only re-pot when you notice a lot of the roots sticking out of the nursery pot. Do not re-pot in the cooler months as this might send him into shock.
TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR PHILODENDRON SCANDENS BRASIL
Lower yellow leaves - This is perfectly normal especially in the winter months. If this problem persists then you might want to reduce how often you water him.
Slow growth or no new growth - There won’t be much new growth in the winter months. Use a houseplant fertiliser once a month in the growth season to help promote new vines. Only fertilise from the months of March-September.
Yellow leaves - This is often caused by overwatering. Let his soil dry out before watering him again. Benny can tolerate a few weeks without water.
OUR TOP 3 CARE TIPS
Top tip 1: Use filtered or rainwater to water Benny. The harsh chemicals found in tap water can harm his root system and cause brown spots on the leaves as a result.
Top tip 2: Water Benny with room temperature or lukewarm water. Cold water could shock his room system.
Top tip 3: Rotate Benny’s pot once a week for even vining growth.
